Workshop in Bharata Natyam Indian Dancewith Mary Koperski

Experience Ancient Indian Temple Dancing!
In this workshop you will get a taste of the rythmic and expressional aspects used in Bharata Natyam, the ancient art of the Indian Temple dancers. We will start with some of the basic movements (adavus) and rhythms of the style. These adavus, practiced symmetrically, have a powerful balancing effect on the mind and body. We will also devote time to some to the facial and eye movements, hand gestures (hastas) and poses that create the expressional aspect of the dance. A small sloka to Lord Shiva may be taught as well as a prayer to Lord Ganesh. Through these slokas we will have the opportunity to get in touch with our own transformational (Shiva) strength and bountiful (Ganesh) energy! For those who are dancers, there will be many possibilities to incorporate bharata natyam style and energy into your own form. For those who are not dancers, it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy your own personal experience of these powerful and balancing energies.

Mary Koperski holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance Performance. She was first introduced to Classical Indian Dance in 1979 as a dance major at New York University School of the Arts. Her first guru was Ritha Devi in the Kuchipudi style. Subsequently, she continued her studies in Boston with Neena Gulati (bharata natyam, kuchipudi and odissi styles) at the Triveni School of Dance and completed her arangetram under the guidance of Neenaji. She has taught both ballet and bharata natyam in a number of venues including Yogi Bhajan's Khalsa Women's Summer Camp in New Mexico. She continues her studies with Neena Gulati as well as teaching at the Triveni School, YogaEast in Wakefield MA, the Kripalu Institute in Lenox MA, NorthEast Youth Ballet and in Boston area elementary after-school programs.
